Egg Production and Planting the Garden

We are seeing between 3-5 eggs per day and looking forward to more egg production as our pullets come into maturity. We have settled on 11 chickens and that feels like a pretty reasonable number for now.

Next weekend we will be getting our plants in the ground. We have had an unseasonably cool spring/summer setting records for low temps. The rest of the country is setting records for high temps. I feel fortunate but I am certain that some of our vegetables need more time in the ground to get the season length they need to fully grow. We’ll see.

A Five Egg Day

For two days in a row! It’s been pretty awesome with us coming into our regular egg pattern around here. We have 14 chickens but had only been getting 2-3 eggs and were only really sure of one of them being a layer. Now we are pretty much on to six of them due to the egg colors (we have Ameraucanas among others). This is allowing us to sell three of our pullets to another urban farmer tonight and recoup more than half of what we spent so far on this year’s ladies. Awesome! To add to the urban farm humor, here is the difference we saw in egg size today.
